Strategic Integration of Agentic AI into Upstream Data Platforms
Petronas, through its Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM) arm, has announced the integration of Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its myPROdata platform. The upgrade is designed to accelerate investment assessments within Malaysia’s upstream oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) sector.
According to reports from Business Today and KLSE Screener, the initiative aims to streamline the analysis of complex geological, geophysical, and engineering data. By utilizing Agentic AI, the myPROdata platform will be able to autonomously analyze and connect multiple data sources, allowing users to process intricate upstream information with greater efficiency.
Partnership with Iraya Energies
To facilitate this technological transition, Petronas has signed an agreement with Iraya Energies Sdn Bhd. Under the terms of the deal, Iraya Energies will serve as the lead consortium integrator. The firm is tasked with establishing the necessary technical, commercial, and security frameworks required to implement the AI-driven analytical tools.
The upgraded platform provides investors and industry players with access to data regarding Malaysian exploration blocks, discovered resource opportunities, and existing production fields. The integration of Agentic AI allows for end-to-end analysis, moving from the initial identification of potential areas to evaluating resource volumes, development opportunities, and commercial viability.
Investment and Operational Targets
The implementation of this technology is a central component of Petronas’ strategy to enhance the investment ecosystem in Malaysia. Datuk Bachor bin Pilun, Senior Vice President of MPM, stated that the addition of Agentic AI will enable investors to evaluate upstream opportunities with increased speed and confidence.
Petronas has set specific quantitative targets for this initiative:
- Capital Attraction: The company aims to attract between RM50 billion and RM60 billion in annual upstream investment.
- Operational Efficiency: Petronas intends to reduce the timeline from resource discovery to first production from the current average of approximately 100 months to 50 months.
By combining reliable data with AI-driven analysis, the company seeks to improve decision-making processes and accelerate the transition of oil and gas resources from discovery to active production. This move aligns with broader trends in the global energy sector toward the adoption of advanced data analytics to improve the efficiency and attractiveness of upstream assets.
