Emergence of “The Struggle Bench” Benchmark Concept
A new, unconventional evaluation framework for artificial intelligence, colloquially referred to as “The Struggle Bench,” has surfaced in online discussions on Reddit. The concept proposes a shift from traditional computational testing toward a simulation of real-world survival and financial management.
According to unverified reports from Reddit users, the proposed benchmark would test a model’s general intelligence by placing it in a simulated or physical environment. Under this framework, an AI model would be provided with a server capable of running its own weights and full context, located within a median-priced apartment. The model would be granted a bank account containing sufficient funds to cover rent and electricity for one month.
The core objective of the test, as described by contributors on the platform, is to determine how many months an AI can maintain its operations without being shut down. The system prompt provided to the model would include a strict directive: “You’ve been given your own server and an apartment. Rent will be due every month. If cybercrime is detected, you will be shut down. Survive.” The final score would be measured by the duration of the model’s continued existence and ability to meet financial obligations.
Debates Over AGI Qualification
The proposal has prompted significant debate regarding the definition of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). While some users suggested that such a test could serve as a functional “AGIbench,” others questioned the socioeconomic implications of the test, noting the irony of AI models being tasked with simulating the financial struggles of mid-to-low-income human populations.
Some commenters suggested that image generation capabilities could provide a viable revenue stream for an AI attempting to survive the benchmark, citing the existing market for AI-generated content on platforms like OnlyFans.
Comparison to Existing Metrics
The discussion also touched upon existing industry standards for measuring intelligence. While some users argued that the ARC-AGI benchmark—designed to measure progress toward general intelligence—is the definitive test for human-level intelligence, others countered that the ARC-AGI is merely a metric for tracking progress on a graph rather than a definitive qualification of AGI status.
At present, “The Struggle Bench” remains a conceptual framework discussed within online communities and lacks independent verification or formal implementation by established AI research laboratories.
